Tao Fong Shan range: four myths before you buy
One Hong Kong ride from Tai Wai over Tsing Sha to Tao Fong Shan. Highway plus a long climb used a 70 to 80 km budget, not the brochure 140. A 13A plug took about 4.5 hours from empty.

The first worry before buying an electric motorcycle in Hong Kong is running out of charge halfway. Brochure range looks long. Hong Kong adds traffic lights, climbs, and sometimes a highway. This note is one ride on 20 October 2026: Tai Wai, Tsing Sha Highway, Tao Fong Shan in Sha Tin, and back. It is a route log, not a lab, and not a promise for every bike.
The brochure says 140 km. What is left on a Hong Kong road?
140 km on a spec sheet feels like enough. In Hong Kong the thirsty parts are often a long time at speed, and a long climb, not crawling in a jam. A highway and a road like Tao Fong Shan drop the pack faster than a flat street.
- Gentle city riding, without holding the throttle open: around 100 km is not unusual.
- This Tai Wai, Tsing Sha, Tao Fong Shan loop, including the climb: 70 to 80 km was the budget treated as safe for that mix.
Do not plan every trip on the official maximum. Sixty to seventy percent of the brochure figure is closer to a Hong Kong departure plan. How to read a range claim is in range.
Why not just buy 200 km of range?
Fear of an empty pack pushes people toward a huge battery. Energy and weight are the same choice. The pack is one of the heaviest parts. Stacking two or three large packs to print 200 km on a brochure can take a bike toward 200 or even 300 kg. That is the scale of the tradeoff, not the registration weight of a model on sale, and it is not a shop quote.
Tao Fong Shan has narrow sections, leaves, mud and standing water. A wrong turn can be a dead end on a tight slope. A bike over 200 kg is hard to pick up if it goes over. The 89 kg bike, with a pack around 20.5 kg, still let both feet reach the ground. Turning it or lifting the tail was a smaller problem. Seat height is still your own sit. The video's 910 mm is on the same model note.
Is charging in Hong Kong more trouble than a petrol stop?
A petrol bike can detour to a station in a few minutes. An electric one at about 10 percent, with no bay you can actually enter, is a real worry. The condition that mattered on this ride was one line: the pack comes out, and it charges from an ordinary 13A three-pin socket.
- Around 20.5 kg can come out and go home or to an office on a trolley. Heavier than that, and not everyone will carry it daily.
- Empty to full was about 4.5 hours. Day to day often starts from about 40 percent, which was about 2 to 2.5 hours back to full.
If the building bans batteries upstairs, the convenience is gone. Ask management first. See removable packs. Many public posts are car bays. Do not assume a motorcycle fits.
What actually changes if you come from a petrol bike?
A petrol trail or geared bike wants fuel, engine oil and gearbox oil before a day out. This electric one drops that oil-system list. Charged, you can leave. That does not cancel brakes, tyres or the battery connectors.
- Fewer engine-oil jobs is not permission to ignore the pack, brakes and tyres.
- No clutch and no gear changes. An automatic motorcycle licence makes it easier to watch the road. A probationary licence still has limits. See probationary licences.
- An automatic licence may match this bike. It still has to match your licence and the class on the registration.
Dogs on Tao Fong Shan: accelerate, or stop?
Quiet roads up there can mean dogs. An electric bike has no engine note, so a dog may notice you late, or step out from the side. Wet leaves are a bad place to force an exit. The rider's choice this time was to stop, keep the bike between himself and the dogs, and back away. That is not the only possible choice. Do not ride closer for a photo.
Is an electric motorcycle the right bike?
No bike fits every distance. If you ride very far every day and refuse to think about charge, petrol still has a place. If you want something around 89 kg, a shorter service list, a household plug, and you accept that range will be shorter than the brochure, including the odd climb, a light electric motorcycle can match. After that, ask whether that frame can be registered, whether the building allows the pack upstairs, and whether an insurer will cover how you ride. This site does not take orders and does not book a test ride.
