A million-dollar inspection claim is not a TD test

Sing Tao on 18 October 2026 quoted Wong Ka-lok on inspection pay. That is a pre-purchase check, not a Transport Department examination. The million-dollar figure is his estimate, not a wage survey, and it does not read a traction battery.

Sing Tao Headline’s 18 October 2026 title says former TVB actor Wong Ka-lok has switched careers to vehicle inspection. The same article says he finished about two months of apprenticeship, says he can practise, and also says he has no plan to leave acting. East Week and HK01 recorded the pay remarks the same week. If a buyer reads “inspection” as a Transport Department examination, that reading is wrong.

Is the inspection he described a Transport Department test?

The reports describe a third-party check before a purchase, not the examination Transport Department uses for registration or licence renewal. East Week on 16 October 2026 wrote that he wore a blue uniform with his name, and spent nearly two hours at a Lai Chi Kok centre on a Mercedes-Benz: body, paint, the coolant under the bonnet, the underside, then a written report. He told that magazine his first used car was not properly checked and soon failed, so he started as an apprentice. That report is about whether buyer and seller trust the car. It is not a first-registration decision.

Sing Tao does not name the body that issued the qualification. “Passed an inspection qualification” is not a Transport Department vehicle-examiner licence, and it is not a motorcycle driving test.

Is a million dollars a year a statistic or his arithmetic?

It is his remark, not a Census and Statistics Department median, not a Vocational Training Council wage, and not a contract this site has seen. Sing Tao quotes him counting on his fingers: over a million a year, five days a week. The article says that during the apprenticeship he tallied the master’s jobs and fees himself. HK01 the same day adds his example of a master he called Tim, who took fewer jobs because of family; someone who inspected more, on his count, could pass a million on a five-day week, and more if they worked every day.

East Week quotes a different pair of figures, also from him: ordinary monthly pay of about HK$40,000 to HK$50,000, and up to a million a year for a senior inspector. Forty to fifty thousand times twelve is about HK$480,000 to HK$600,000. That is not the same band as “over a million”. Both lines can be his estimates. They cannot be edited into “the starting salary is a million”. This site has not checked any centre’s fee table.

Did he change careers?

When the headline and the body disagree, this site follows the words he is quoted as saying, not the headline’s conclusion. Sing Tao says he has no plan to switch, and that the qualification is one more skill. HK01 quotes him saying he still wants to act, and is not ready to switch fully, because he thinks he needs more practice and because he wants to keep working in film and television. East Week quotes him on part-time work, on not yet being confident, and on not being able to afford damage to a Ferrari-class car. All three are entertainment interviews from mid-October 2026, not a Labour Department employment survey.

Can this kind of check read an electric-motorcycle battery?

Paint, the underside and oil leaks are what a petrol-car inspection often covers. Part of an electric motorcycle’s depreciation sits in battery health, which a look under the bike does not show. Have a workshop that knows the brand read the data. Do not trust the bars on the dash. Papers, transfer and remaining cover are in used electric motorcycles. An inspector without that brand’s diagnostic tool cannot replace the agent’s reading, and cannot replace Transport Department on whether the bike can be registered.

What does a Transport Department examination look at?

A registered electric motorcycle has to match the specification it was registered with. Changing power, lights or structure can need approval, and can affect insurance. See modifications. That is an examination and insurance question. It has nothing to do with an actor’s side income. The road still requires a licence, third-party cover and an approved helmet. See the rules.

Is this page telling you to train as an inspector?

No. This site does not recruit for any inspection centre, and it does not turn an interview figure into a course selling point. If you hire someone to look at a used bike before you pay, ask whether they check cosmetics and structure or can read battery data, who signs the report, and who answers if it is wrong. The boundary of this page is the disclaimer.
