Register the bike before you fall for the colour. First registration tax on electric motorcycles is fully waived until 31 March 2028. The yearly licence fee is HK$1,314.

Buying an electric motorcycle in Hong Kong does not start with the paint. Confirm the frame can be registered as a motorcycle, which licence you hold, and that an insurer will cover how you will use it. Then look at range and charging. Shop stickers are not our prices.

What do you actually pay?

The usual list is the bike, first registration, the vehicle licence, third-party insurance, a helmet and a lock. Electric motorcycles currently get a full first registration tax waiver until 31 March 2028. Do not copy the private-car tax story onto a motorcycle. The private-motorcycle licence is HK$1,314 a year, or HK$488 for four months.

Costs to list before you buy. Amounts follow that day's paperwork.

Which three questions should you ask the shop?

  1. Will Transport Department accept first registration of this frame number today?
  2. Can the battery come home, and does the warranty include it?
  3. Does the Hong Kong price include registration paperwork, and what happens to the deposit if it cannot be plated?

What should you read next?

To compare petrol, read electric or petrol. For the tax and licence fee, read first registration, licence and insurance. If you already have a model in mind, start with the model notes.
